Family and Friends… I am PROUD to announce the 2022 recipient of the Shareyna Nicole Scholarship Award – Ms. Tamia Watkins of Rahway, NJ and Rahway Senior High School’s Valedictorian!! The committee was absolutely impressed by her application and overall professionalism.
Tamia is a demonstration of pure excellence in all that she sets out to do – both inside and outside of the classroom. A true leader and young woman of character, Tamia pushed herself beyond any limits that were set in front of her. Throughout high school, Tamia served as an officer on nearly 10 committees and held various leadership positions including: president of the Student Government Association, president of the National Honor Society, president of the National Math Honor Society.
Her volunteer work includes serving at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and on Rahway’s Winter Color Guard. Tamia has been recognized for various accolades and awards including: College Board’s National African American Recognition Program, Advanced Placement Hall of Fame, High Honor Roll (all 4 years) Student of the Month (10th & 11th grade). Tamia comes highly recommended by her teachers and is revered by her peers.
Tamia will be attending Tufts University in the fall where she will embark upon her research journey in Biological Science. Tufts University is recognized among the premier universities in the United States, known for its rigorous and innovative research and educational programs.
Tamia will be studying obstetrics and gynecology where she plans to “give back to underprivileged, minority women while creating an equal standard for ALL female patients.” She believes that she “cannot single handedly change America’s healthcare system, [but] more people of color physicians can positively change America’s inequitable healthcare system.” The scholarship committee is pleased to award Tamia the full $500 scholarship towards her college expenses.
The Shareyna Nicole Scholarship award provides between $250 and $500 to one high school female on the basis of her scholastic aptitude, leadership, and impact on her local community. Congratulations Tamia!!!
